When I was in group therapy as a child we talked about coping mechanisms and this was 2005 where no
15-year-old-girl-knew anything about ‘self-care’. It wasn’t a term that was appreciated as it is today.
Alas, that was mine. The question was posed to us girls who were dealing with sh*t even grown women
shouldn’t have to face: ‘what do you do when you can’t do anything?’ Essentially, how do you pick
yourself up when you feel hopeless?
My answer, and what I did in practice was take care of myself. Take a long hot shower, wash my hair,
tweeze my face, maybe give myself a mini at home facial, mini manicure, long hot bath, wrap my hair up
with a conditioning treatment, sleep with it in, light a candle, use essential oils, give myself a foot rub
and put on warm socks!
I would do these things in the middle of the night, if I was struggling. Or on a Sunday afternoon if bad
feelings were striking me, if I was feeling ‘off’.
This proved to be a solid coping mechanism and I’m happy to carry it into adulthood.
Taking care of yourself is good for you. Taking care of yourself is essential. Taking care of yourself
improves your mental clarity. Taking care of yourself is healthy!
Opening this space for us all to share how we currently take care of ourselves.
Our favorite ritual of care, how it supports you. Makes you feel stronger, healthier, more confident, and
more capable.
We love to empower eachother and encourage each other to take care of ourselves. Let go of the false
guilt that can haunt these actions, and instead let’s all flaunt these actions!
